CONTAINER FOR ZAMBIA (JANUARY 2010)

For the past couple of years we have been gathering donated items to be sent to our community development project in Zambia. We have finally been able to purchase a 40 ft container and have begun loading it. It is not yet full so we will continue to gather items until it is full enough to ship; likely very early in 2010.

Some items may also be taken over to Zambia by teams going to work at the project during the year.

We need to take care that the items that are donated are suitable for the needs of the people that we will be serving in Zambia.  Keep in mind that these people currently have very little and they live in a simple rural environment so items that we bring to them must not be too “fancy”.  Conversely when giving them used items we do not want those items to be too worn and shabby.

School Supplies

Yes : regular pencils HB, ball point pens, coloring pencils, wax crayons, colored markers, basic pencil sharpeners, erasers, rulers (maximum 12 inch), lined and squared exercise books (40 pages minimum, preferably 72-80 pages), scissors

Carpentry – hand saws, hand drills, hand planes, chisels, clamps,

We are also looking for portable 100V generators (gas powered) and if we can secure one or two we would also be seeking some basic power hand tools – drills, saws, routers, grinders,

Sports Equipment
– soccer is extremely popular in Africa but few people can afford uniforms and equipment.  Used soccer uniforms and cleats for all ages are therefore in great demand.  Good used or new soccer balls, volley balls and basketballs are also required together with hand pumps and needles. New and used tennis balls

Musical Instruments
- Acoustic guitar, trumpet, saxophone, tambourine, triangle. Music books.

Sewing and Needle Work
- Wool/yarn for knitting and crocheting, knitting and crocheting needles, knitting and crocheting patterns or magazines, small sewing kits.

Sewing machines – would have to be manual ones as there is no power in the community

Medical

Basic medical supplies & instruments : band aids, bandages, dressing gauzes, cotton wool, disposable syringes, latex gloves, Q-tips, peri pads, stethoscopes, blood-pressure cuffs, kidney basins, instrument trays, forceps (dressing, stitch and Cheatle)

Mosquito nets

Wheel chairs, walkers, crutches

Used sheets and pillow cases, blankets, towels

Vegetable seeds – carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, spinach, watermelon,

Electronics
– we are not able to take any electrical appliances as there is no power in the community and the voltage is 220V.  We do plan on setting up a computer lab at the school but that will be much in the future.

Books, Clothing and Shoes, and Toys  – we now have enough of these items for this load so will not be accepting any more. (Call 780-289-1803 if you have any questions !)
