History of the Choir :
In late 2004, the choir was conceived to bring
together singers in the Parkland area and to present a program called ‘Evidence
of Grace’. Its purpose was to reflect on the local Christian heritage during the
Alberta Centenary celebrations in 2005. The group, numbering 75 and drawn from
many churches in the area, did capacity-crowd performances in February and March
2005 at four local venues – one in Spruce Grove, two in Stony Plain and one in
West Edmonton.
Following the success of this initial project, many of the participants and those in the audiences requested that the choir continue in some fashion. They felt that it was a wonderful way to bring together singers from different musical backgrounds in order to celebrate and share the music of the Christian faith with a broader audience in the Parkland Community.
In the spring of 2006 a second program, ‘Lift Up Your Eyes’, was presented at venues in Stony Plain and Spruce Grove - again with resounding success.
Immediately after that, discussions began about another event, which resulted in the idea that a production revolving around the Christmas story should be developed. Members of the group worked throughout the summer of 2006 to select the songs and write the script for the show 'An Evening in December', which consisted of numerous vignettes of a woman's Christmas celebrations as they took place throughout her life. This production was performed at the Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove for two nights in early December. The choir of some 60 members was made up of singers ranging in age from 16 to 70 and accompanied, for the first time, by a live orchestra of 20. Net proceeds of the event were donated to The Simon Poultney Foundation for use in their Young Lions Media project in the local community.
